Savings from back-to-school tax-free shopping this weekend may help pay for an additional shirt or pair of jeans for some families.
But for others, the whole idea is chump change.
The tax-free weekend – in which Texas shoppers can avoid up to 8.25 percent on most clothing, shoes and backpacks priced under $100 through Sunday – has a lot of hoopla associated with it, but it still has its critics.
The state comptroller's office estimates shoppers will save $52.1 million in taxes this weekend. But credit counselors say some consumers fall victim to the frenzied buying and build up heavy credit card debt.
