In March, Vanderkleed bought the Hene-Gouloos house at 640 Ferry St. for about $219,000. That was roughly $61,000 less than the price originally listed by the former owner, Lafayette Neighborhood Housing Services Inc.
"The $280,000 was what the Realtor felt the property was worth," said Pat Stephenson, the executive director of Neighborhood Housing. "But it was on the market for quite a long time. So we had reduced the price two or three times prior to the sale."
Neighborhood Housing, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving older houses, announced last week that debts have led it to place about 100 of its apartments on the market. Stephenson said the organization owes about $3.7 million on those units, which are contained in 44 buildings, mostly in and near downtown Lafayette.
