Just in time for the tax season run-off, the Internal Revenue Service has released its 2008 list of what it calls its “dirty dozen” tax scams. The are the scams and how to recognize them:
1. Phishing — This is a tactic used by Internet-based thieves to trick victims into revealing personal information, including fake e-mails that purport themselves to be from the IRS.
Note: The IRS never uses e-mail to contact taxpayers about their tax issues. Never.
2. Economic stimulus rebate scams — Quick to act, scammers are already trying to trick individuals into revealing their personal financial information by posing as IRS agents. One scam is to call victims or e-mail them, saying they need to provide a bank account number in order to get their rebate. Don’t believe it. Refer to note above.
