Don't fall for advertisements offering to fix or repair consumer credit.
Any consumer can take the necessary steps to correct errors on a credit report. However, if something in your credit report is correct but unflattering, you're stuck with it until the bill has been resolved and enough time has passed to heal the ding.
"No one can really clean up true information," said Cynthia Albert of the Better Business Bureau. "The only thing [credit repair services] may be able to do if they find something false is to delete it, but you can do that yourself."
