Since then, the 14th-largest New Jersey credit union by assets has added branches in Newark and Paterson, received regulatory approval to expand in Bergen County, and introduced small-business products and services such as business loans and lines of credit, payment processing and cash-management services.
Garcia is stepping up efforts to establish a branch of her credit union in the state's most populous county within two years as NJFCU tries to fight off competition from banks. She is scouting locations in Hackensack and Paramus and is looking to tap into the burgeoning Hispanic population in Bergen County.
"What I like about Bergen County is that it's a larger county [than Passaic], and there are underserved markets not being served by the big banks," she said.
