Prepare for Life's Impact on Credit, Finances

The birth of a child, marriage, divorce, and the death of a spouse are significant events that alter many aspects of a person's life. Although concerns for finances may not always be top of mind during such times, it's important to be aware of how these events can impact personal credit and finances.

Southern consumers in line for free credit reports

Those living in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas will be able to obtain a free credit report per year from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union.

Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act goes into effect.

Congress enacted the law in December 2003 to combat identity theft. The act also allows consumers to look for any suspicious activity related to their credit. Consumers currently must pay for the reports. The fees vary at each company. If consumers want to receive more than one report a year, they still will have to pay for that service.
